Medical Question

I have this long drawn out cough which has remained untreatable for two years now. I have also had high BP, and ulcers. What could be the cause of my coughing for the whole day especially at night. It makes me spit a lot with phlegm

Dear Martha,

I understand your concern.

Chronic cough for two years at age of 65 with history of high blood pressure and ulcers could  be due to many causes. High blood pressure can cause pulmonary edema and congestive heart problem the presentation of which can be cough with shortness of breath.

Ulcers and gastric acid refluxes lead to airway irritation and lead to such chronic cough.  Need supportive care for that. Chronic bronchitis can also be considered as the commonest cause for any cough longer than 3 months and local lungs causes should be evaluated.  Your profession of being a farmer itself is a trigger and can lead to allergic cough. needs work up and evaluation to sort out the cause in your case.

Talk to your pulmonologist and let them sort it out for you.
