Dear Amy,
Red, itchy bumps or rashes on the skin can be a sign of numerous conditions, ranging from a viral infection to an allergic reaction.
A few such conditions are:
· Insect bites such as that by mosquitoes and mites
· Hives: Sizable bumps that appear and disappear in a few hours, triggered by allergens
· Folliculitis: Inflammation of hair follicles. They look like pimples
· Chicken pox and shingles
· Contact dermatitis like Poison ivy
· Scabies
Home remedies usually clear up most such itchy bumps. Stop scratching to prevent bruising and infection of the wound. Ice cubes can be used to relieve discomfort. If you can figure out what is triggering your rash, avoid contact with such allergens. Take an antihistamine. Use a moisturizer to keep the rashes moist. Most rashes heal within a week or two.
If home remedies are not enough to get rid of your rashes, you must visit your doctor. Steroid creams, like hydrocortisone will help in cases of allergy. Antibiotic or antifungal agents can be used for infections like folliculitis. Conditions like chicken pox may need antiviral therapy.
